Rowers get Jubilee gig
8:50am Friday 27th January 2012
Gig crews from across the Falmouth area are set to be at the heart of one of the biggest days of celebrations Britain has ever seen.
Up to 1.8 million spectators are expected to line the Thames to witness the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant as more than 1,000 vessels sail down the river.
More than 3,000 gig, boats, yachts and ships of all shapes and sizes applied to take part in the event on Sunday, June 3.
Amongst the successful applicants were crews from the Helford River, Mylor and Flushing and Devoran gig clubs.
Adrian Evans, Pageant Master and Director of the Thames Festival, added: “The breadth and high quality of applicants has made the selection process for participating boats very challenging. I thank everyone who has responded so enthusiastically to this unique event.
“We have a wonderful collection of vessels, a wide spectrum of every type of craft from humble kayaks to magnificent tall ships, with rowed shallops, oyster smacks, steamers, cutters, cruisers and barges.”
