Chainsaw attack on nature reserve

A suspected chainsaw attack has left a number of trees in Swanpool Nature Reserve damaged and disfigured this week.

The “quite substantial” alder and sycamore trees have been hacked at and painted over with black paint to disguise the damage according to Pete Lochrie, who helps manage the reserve.

He said: “We can’t prove who has done it, but there’s evidence that it has been done and all we want them to do is stop it.

“We don’t want retribution – we don’t want a big deal made of it because most people passing by wouldn’t see them.

“But we have got to get it across to people that the nature reserve is the nature reserve – it’s private, it’s sacrosanct and it can’t be messed around with.”

Mr Lochrie said he would be installing signs around the back of the reserve to warn people not to trespass on the land.

He requested that anyone with any information about the damaged trees visit call him on 314740 or e-mail swanpool.beach@yahoo.co.uk
