Redruth turn on the style against Stourbridge

9:33am Thursday 18th March 2010

Redruth showed their best form since Christmas to run in six tries against Stourbridge at the Recreation ground to record an important victory.

A win for third bottom Otley over London Scottish in Yorkshire not only put the reds last two performances into perspective but also raised the bar for the relegation cut off. Redruth now need at least one win in their games against fellow relegation candidates Newbury, Blackheath and Sedgley Park, the first two games being away.

The game did not start well for the Reds on a bright spring day. Stourbridge kicked off into hellfire corner and with Nick Simmons indecisive in clearing the ball Stourbridge forced a turnover that led to Ali Bressington going over for a try. As the Reds started to come into the game Lewis Vinnicombe beat his man on the outside to cross for an unconverted try in the scoreboard corner.

With the reds on top patient forward play ended with Peter Joyce going over for a well deserved try five minutes later after a series of pick and drives wore down the visitors defence.

Although not at full strength Stourbridge looked dangerous at times and a long run by Ben Barkley led to an unconverted try for James Rodley to level the scores after 23 minutes.

Nathan Pedley who was full of running touched down the reds third try after half an hour that Ardyan Winnan converted to see the reds take a 17-10 lead into the break.

After the interval Winnan kicked two penalties with the reds well on top, Darren Jacques was having a good game destroying his opposite number in the scrums.

Hooker Matt Gidlow has been playing well in recent weeks and got a well deserved try in Piggy lane corner and was a good choice for the sponsors "Man of the match" award. Twenty-eight to ten down Stourbridge put the reds under pressure for a while but Sam Robinson missed a straight forward penalty. Finishing strongly Redruth added tries by Vinnicombe and replacement Tom Cowan -Dickie to finish comfortable winners.
